Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about sizing, materials, shipping, and ordering your perfect walking cane.

Sizing & Customization

How to determine the optimal length & What cane size do I need?

The optimal length is highly individual. It depends on your height, regular shoe soles, arm length, and posture. The standard length of our canes is 36" (92 cm).

We recommend ordering the standard size and shortening it yourself (it's very easy to do with any saw, and the rubber tip hides the cut), or let us cut it for you before shipping, absolutely free!

The Golden Rule for Measurement: For the perfect fit, stand straight in your regular shoes with your arms down naturally. Measure the distance from the ground to your wrist crease. This is your exact functional length.

Watch our measurement guide:

How do we measure?
We measure the cane from the top point of palm support to the bottom point. Decorative details above the palm rest are not included in the functional length

How to Shorten your walking cane (Step-by-Step Guide)?

⚠️ CRITICAL NOTE FOR BRONZE SERIES: Canes from our Bronze & Wood collection feature a solid metal fixed bottom and cannot be cut or shortened manually after delivery. Please make sure to specify your exact desired length in the order notes at checkout so our master craftsmen can cut it precisely for you before shipping.

Sizing tables and digital calculators provide an excellent approximation, but every individual is unique (posture, arm length, and walking gait vary). A physical on-site test is always the most accurate method.

The Golden Rule of Sizing: If you are hesitant between two sizes, always choose the slightly longer option. A wooden cane shaft is exceptionally easy to shorten on-site with any basic saw, but making it longer again is far more difficult.

How to properly measure and shorten a GC-Artis wooden cane

Important: Always measure from the flat palm-rest surface at the back of the handle, never from the highest point of a decorative hand-carved figure.

If your wooden cane arrives and feels a bit too tall, follow our precise, artisan-verified shortening process:

Step 1. Remove the Rubber Cap Gently pull and twist the anti-slip rubber tip off the bottom of the wooden shaft.
Step 2. Measure & Mark from the Palm Support Using a measuring tape, measure from the flat surface of the handle (where your palm actually rests) down the shaft to your exact recommended length. Mark this position clearly with a pen or marker.
Step 3. Apply Masking Tape Protection Wrap a layer of standard masking tape or painters tape just above your marked cutting line. This crucial step holds the wood fibers tightly together and guarantees the wood lacquer will not splinter or chip during sawing.
Step 4. Detach the Handle for Safety Unscrew and remove the hand-carved handle from the metal joint interface. This leaves you with just the straight wooden shaft, making it significantly safer and easier to secure on your workbench or table edge.
Step 5. Execute a Clean Straight Cut Using any standard hand saw or electric miter saw, apply firm downward pressure and cut straight across the shaft, exactly flush with the bottom edge of your masking tape layer.
Step 6. Reinstall the Rubber Tip Securely Peel off the protective masking tape. To ensure a tight, durable fit that won't slip under your full weight, spray a tiny amount of wood polish or silicone lubricant inside the rubber tip before sliding and pushing it firmly back onto the freshly cut shaft.

How to Lengthen your walking cane?

If you require a cane length longer than our standard stock size of 36 inches, GC-Artis provides a premium, seamless solution using our **precision-engineered shaft extenders**.

Our craftsmen will install a custom wooden extension section that screws securely between the handle and the shaft. This maintains the cane's perfect structural integrity, elegant design flow, and ergonomic balance for taller users.

How to Order an Extended Length:

You do not need to perform complex calculations or buy separate components. Available lengths and precise, collection-specific pricing are completely integrated into the product options.

  1. Look for the "Specify Your Custom Height" dropdown menu directly on the product page.
  2. Select your required length option marked with "+ Paid Extension".
  3. The system will dynamically calculate and update the total cost in your cart automatically.
How to select extended cane length options on the GC-Artis product page

Visual Guide: Simply open the dropdown directly above the "Add to Cart" button to unlock extra length options.

📌 Pro Tip: If you are still uncertain about your final functional height, we always recommend ordering a slightly longer custom length. A wooden shaft can be effortlessly shortened on-site later if needed, whereas lengthening a cane after delivery requires a separate extension component.

Handle Sizing & Grip Compatibility Guidelines

Every GC-Artis walking cane features a fixed, non-adjustable handle unique to that specific design (One Size). We do not custom-sculpt handle sizes per individual order.

Instead, different cane models are anatomically pre-shaped by our artisans to offer the best fit for specific hand categories. Before purchasing, your main task is simply to verify compatibility—ensure your hand size matches the guidelines listed in the item's description:

  • Massive & Carved Designs (e.g., solid animal heads) ideally fit medium-to-large hands: M, L, XL
  • Sleek & Compact Designs (e.g., classic or slim styles) ideally fit smaller-to-medium hands: S, M, L
  • Universal Ergonomic Handles feature asymmetrical shapes that are comfortable for all hand sizes.

You will always find the exact grip suitability information under the specifications section of each product page.

How to verify your fit: Measure your palm width using the dynamic guide chart below and check if your size aligns with the compatible range indicated in the cane's description.

GC-Artis Handle Grip Size Chart — How to Measure Your Palm to Verify Cane Compatibility

Are cane handles interchangeable? Can I order extra handles?

Yes! You may order one shaft and multiple handles to swap between looks. You'll also save on shipping costs since additional handles don't significantly change parcel weight

⚠️ Important: Only handles from the same collection are interchangeable. Handle height must match the shaft it is paired with. Different series may use different shaft dimensions

Please contact us specifying the cane designs you're interested in, and we'll give you precise interchangeability information before you order

How to install a leather wrist strap (3 Connection Types)?

2. Elastic Loop Connection (For standard shafts without a ring)

Usage & Safety

I have a serious health problem - can I use GC-Artis Walking canes?

GC-Artis Walking Canes are not registered as a Medical Device & not subject to mandatory certification in the EU or FDA registration in the USA

Our canes are fully functional, well-tested, high-quality, and more convenient than most standard canes

If you have a serious musculoskeletal disease, are prone to falling, or have suffered surgery after a fracture/insertion of an artificial limb/joint, we recommend using our canes ONLY after consultation with your therapist!

We do not recommend using our canes for persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge without proper supervision

If you decide to use our cane, we strongly recommend:

  • Replacing the standard rubber tip with a certified medical one for better shock absorption (ask us, we can help)
  • Adhering strictly to the weight limit specified in the item description
  • Maintaining correct hand positioning when using the cane

What are the weight support limits?

Walking canes assist with balance, not full-weight support like crutches. They provide an extra point of contact for stability. Limits vary by collection:

  • Solid Wooden Canes: up to 250 lbs / 112 kg
  • Bronze & Wood Canes: up to 260 lbs / 118 kg
  • Ergonomic Solid Canes: up to 360 lbs / 160 kg

These limits are specified for the standard 36" / 92 cm cane and assume that the direct load on the cane represents approximately 30–50% of the person's body weight, not 100%

Tip: If your weight is close to or exceeds 240–250 lbs, we recommend using a rubber tip with a larger support base (tripod or quad base). This increases the effective load limit by approximately 10–20%

⚠️ IT IS CRUCIAL to hold the cane correctly to ensure stability and reliability while walking. The correct grip involves placing your palm firmly on the handle, with the cane held between your index and middle fingers. Ensure that the vector/direction of the support force aligns precisely with the shaft. DO NOT LEAN ON THE BACK PART OF THE HANDLE!

How do I hold the walking cane correctly?

It is critical to hold the cane correctly to ensure stability and reliability

Place your palm firmly over the center of the handle, with the cane's shaft running between your index and middle fingers. The downward pressure should align perfectly with the vertical axis of the wooden shaft.

WARNING: DO NOT LEAN ON THE BACK PART OF THE HANDLE! This applies a dangerous lever force that can cause the handle to snap under pressure.

Materials & Quality

What types of wood and finishes are used?

At GC-Artis, we source only the finest, sustainably harvested Premium Hardwoods. For our hand-carved elements, we primarily select top-grade European Oak and European Ash, known for their exceptional density, rich grain patterns, and structural resilience.

Our cane shafts are carefully crafted from Solid European Ash — mathematically the optimal hardwood for long-bearing components. It provides a beautiful natural texture, absorbs walking impacts, and — unlike cheaper softwoods or commercial alternatives — is physically incapable of spontaneous bending or warping over time.

🔍 Product Specification Note: Because our collection features diverse design families (including solid bronze heads, combined metal accents, and various wood combinations), you can always find the exact component-by-component material breakdown listed inside the specifications section of each unique product description.

To guarantee lifelong stability, all raw lumber undergoes a rigorous 120-day controlled drying process before it ever reaches our master carvers. This eliminates residual internal moisture and completely prevents any future cracking or splitting.

The Premium Finish: Every cane is sealed with multiple coats of a professional, two-component non-toxic clear acrylic lacquer from SIRCA S.p.A. (Italy). This creates an elegant 30% silk-matte gloss that enhances the wood's natural character. The finish is fully hypoallergenic, meets strict EN71/3:2019 safety standards, and remains completely odorless and safe for daily skin contact.

Are your walking canes truly handmade?

Every cane is a product of artisan craftsmanship. We combine handwork and modern technologies. While we use high-precision CNC machinery for initial rough carving (approx. 20-25%), the vast majority of our work (75-80%) involves extensive hand-carving and manual finishing by our skilled Ukrainian artists

The level of handwork depends on the collection:

  • Signature carved collections (e.g., animal heads, decorative series): 75–80% handwork
  • Ergonomic & entry-level series (where exact shape repetition is critical): 10–20% handwork with precision CNC
  • Hand-painted one-of-a-kind custom orders: 100% Available from $500 USD (see Custom Orders section)

Watch our making process below:

Does the rubber tip/strap come in a set?

Yes! Every GC-Artis Walking Cane comes ready to use with high-quality accessories included. You get:

  • The crafted Handle & Wooden Shaft
  • A standard 3/4'' size Rubber Tip (or elegant metal tip for Bronze & Wood series)
  • A genuine leather wrist strap

About our Genuine Leather Wrist Straps

Starting in 2026, all GC-Artis canes include a premium genuine leather wrist strap. Depending on the cane model, the strap connects via one of three methods:

What type and size of rubber tips do you use?

Standard Wooden Canes — Branded 3/4" Rubber Tip

All standard wooden canes ship with our own branded 3/4" (19mm) rubber tip. This is the most universal cane tip size, widely available at pharmacies, medical supply stores, and online in many variants: standard, extra-grip, winter ice, tripod, and quad-base.

GC-Artis Branded 3/4 inch Rubber Cane Tip

Bronze & Wood Series — Elegant Metal Tip with Removable Rubber Pad

Our Bronze & Wood series canes feature a unique, elegant metal tip with a removable anti-slip rubber pad. A spare pad is included in the box. To replace the pad: unscrew with a PH screwdriver ➔ swap the pad ➔ tighten the screw.

Watch the rubber pad replacement guide:

Where to find replacement tips?

We do not sell replacement rubber tips separately due to international shipping costs. However, since our canes use the standard 3/4" (19mm) size, replacements are universally available at any local pharmacy or online: Search for 3/4" rubber tips online.

Tip: If you plan to order another cane from us in the future, just let us know — we'll include a spare tip in the same box at no extra charge

Shipping & Delivery

What if I found a similar cane cheaper on another website?

It is physically impossible to buy an authentic, handmade GC-Artis masterpiece at a lower price. Genuine GC-Artis walking canes are sold strictly through our official branded stores and authorized channels under our registered trademark name.

Our pricing policy is fully standardized globally. While you might see slight variations in how shipping is displayed (for example, on our Etsy store shipping may be calculated separately, whereas here it is often integrated), the total landed cost remains identical everywhere.

⚠️ BEWARE OF FRAUDULENT COPIES: If you discover our signature designs listed at a significantly lower price on platforms like AliExpress, Temu, eBay, or unverified standalone shops, it is a 100% guarantee of a cheap, low-quality Asian counterfeit.

Scammers frequently steal our original photography, studio renders, and demonstration videos to pass off fragile, factory-molded imitations as our authentic handcrafted wood and bronze art. Using these counterfeits is highly dangerous, as their weak structural joints can buckle under standard body weight.

To protect your safety and investment, we highly recommend reading our full investigative breakdown on how to spot these illegal copies: GC-Artis Original vs. Fake Counterfeit Warning ➔

What are the shipping times and where do you ship from?

Most of our canes ship directly from our workshop located in Ukraine. We also keep select best-sellers stocked in our USA warehouse for faster domestic delivery

We use Nova Poshta / NP Global and sometimes UPS (fast and reliable international shipping services) as our primary carrier. These are the fastest shipping methods available on the market – we provide it as a standard option, so no options of shipping upgrade

Order Processing Time: Orders are typically processed within 1 business day. During peak periods (after holidays or weekends), processing may extend to 2 business days. Orders requiring customization (custom length, engraving, etc.) may require an additional 1–3 days

Estimated Delivery Times:

  • USA: 7-12 business days
  • Europe: 7-10 business days
  • Canada & Rest of World: 10-18 business days
  • Australia & Oceania: 2-3 weeks

Note: During peak holiday seasons, delays of several additional business days may occur across all routes due to increased carrier volume

⚠️ Please Note: We do not deliver to PO Boxes or Military APO/FPO addresses at this time

How do I track my order and identify the carrier?

Once your order reaches the destination country, it is handed over to a local carrier for the "last-mile" delivery. You can identify which company is handling your package by the prefix of your tracking number:

Track your order directly:

My package is delayed or the tracking says "Delivered" but I haven't received it

Package Delayed? Over 95% of our packages arrive on time, and fewer than 0.5% are ever lost. Delays can happen during holiday seasons, severe weather, or other logistical events. Delivery is our risk, not yours

If your package has not arrived within 7 business days after the estimated delivery window, please contact us and we'll open an investigation claim with the carrier immediately. If the package cannot be located, we will resend your order or issue a full refund

Tracking says "Delivered" but the package isn't there? This happens occasionally and is often a misunderstanding or a technical scan error. Please:

  • Check all possible locations where a courier might leave a large package (behind a vase, under a bench, near a bush, over a fence, etc.)
  • Ask all family members or guests at your home if they received it on your behalf
  • Check with neighbors
  • Review any available security camera footage

If the package still cannot be found, please open an investigation claim on the carrier's website immediately using your tracking number. Carriers keep GPS data and door photos of deliveries and can usually resolve the issue quickly. Unfortunately, we are unable to open a claim on the sender's end after the status shows "Delivered" — so please act promptly

If the carrier is unable to locate the parcel, we will send you a replacement or issue a full refund

Will I be charged import duties or VAT taxes?

USA Customers (DDP — Delivered Duty Paid): You will NOT pay any extra fees upon delivery! We cover all import tariffs and fees for you. As of August 29, 2025, the US de minimis exemption has been eliminated, meaning all imported parcels are subject to duty. For packages from Ukraine, the applicable duty rate is 10% — and we pay this on your behalf when shipping. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay, period

Europe, Canada & Rest of World (DDU — Delivered Duty Unpaid): Orders are shipped Delivered Duty Unpaid. Your local customs office or the carrier may collect VAT and import duties upon delivery (e.g., Canadian customs typically collect around 20–30 CAD). These fees are the buyer's responsibility and are paid to your country's customs in accordance with local law

Note for EU buyers via Etsy: Etsy automatically collects and remits VAT for orders under €150 — all required tax documentation is included with your parcel so customs will not charge you twice

Lifetime Support: We provide lifetime support for your cane, ensuring its durability and helping with any questions or issues throughout its life. We will help you with ordering any replacement part for your cane at a special price. For assistance, please contact us

Our quality commitment: Every GC-Artis handle is internally reinforced with a solid wooden pin at the narrowest point — the zone of highest stress — to prevent breakage under load. Before shipping, each cane is individually drop-tested from a height of 2 feet onto a concrete surface to verify structural integrity. Our canes are engineered to withstand direct support forces approximately 6x greater than the stated weight limit

Minor cosmetic damage or scratches? We used a professional wood toner ("dark walnut") and 30% gloss clear acrylic varnish in our finish. Visit a local furniture paint store to find a matching toner and touch-up varnish — they usually have paint samples to compare shades and can sell small quantities. Color-matched furniture restoration markers (such as Powerfix markers, darker shade IAN#306940 or lighter shade IAN#300040) are also a quick and effective option for minor repairs

Custom & Personalized Orders

Do you accept custom / individual cane orders?

⚠️ Note: We are not currently accepting fully custom individual orders — all of our artists are engaged with existing corporate projects and new collection development. Please describe your idea anyway; we may have something very similar already in our catalog that hasn't been listed yet. Send us a message

Fully custom individual orders (a completely new design or major rework of an existing design — new shape, composition, etc.) require significant development time:

  • One-of-a-kind custom design (1 piece): from $500 USD — lead time 1–3 months
  • Small series (10 pieces), great for corporate gifts: from $150–250 USD/piece — lead time 1–3 months
  • Small series (20+ pieces): from $125–250 USD/piece — lead time 2–3 months

Each new design undergoes a rigorous engineering and artistic development process: clay master model sculpting ➔ balance and ergonomics testing ➔ wooden prototype ➔ production. Watch how it works ➔

What quick personalizations and customizations are available?

Even if we cannot take a fully custom order right now, we offer a wide range of quick personalization options for any cane in our store:

  • Length customization: Shorter — Free | Longer (via shaft extension) — from $7.50 to $24.50 depending on design
  • Travel / Collapsible Edition: Two-part collapsible shaft, perfect for carry-on luggage or motorcycle bags — additional fee (contact us for a quote)
  • Elegant Brass Tip instead of standard rubber tip — +$6.00 USD
  • Additional Wood Carving (a separate element within the existing form) — from $30 USD, discussed individually
  • Non-standard Color Painting — +$15.00 USD
  • Custom Hand Painting by a professional artist — from $30 USD, discussed individually
  • Laser Engraving on the wooden cane or brass collar: Up to 5 characters — Free; +$1.00 per additional character. Logos or images are possible (vector file required) — approx. $10 USD

To request any of the above, place your order and include a note in the order details, or send us a message immediately after ordering. We will invoice you separately for any paid customizations

Do you offer discounts or sales?

We strive to offer our clients 'Art in Function' — true high-quality, reliable canes with museum-level craftsmanship at a fair price. Therefore, we generally do not run massive sales. Please understand and respect the intricate work of our professional artisans.

However, we do offer specific programs:

  1. Automatic Bundle Discount: Get 10% off + combined shipping when buying 2 or more canes
  2. Veterans Discount: Up to 15% off. Please contact our manager for details Veterans Discount — GC-Artis Walking Canes
  3. Loyalty Discount: Up to 10% off for returning customers
  4. Seasonal: Limited temporary discounts for holidays
  5. Cosmetic Imperfections: If you are on a strict budget, we occasionally offer up to 50% off on fully functional canes with minor visual defects (e.g., a varnish smudge or a small wood knot). Contact us for availability

Do you offer discounted canes with cosmetic imperfections?

Yes! From time to time we offer select canes at up to 50% off. These are fully functional, complete canes (handle + shaft + rubber tip + wrist strap) that have minor cosmetic imperfections only — such as a small varnish smudge, a minor paint inconsistency, a slight error in carving, or a natural wood feature like a small knot or stain. Structurally, they are identical to our full-price products

If you are interested in a discounted cosmetic-defect cane, please contact us. We will share available options with photos and detailed descriptions of the specific imperfection on each piece, so you can make an informed choice

Maintenance & Care

How to store and protect my cane?

Always hold your cane with a correct grip to prevent falls and uneven pressure on the handle. Do not leave the cane in direct sunlight, hot vehicles, or near heating devices for extended periods to prevent the wood from drying, cracking, or warping

Read the full Use & Care Guide here ➔

How to clean and polish the wood/metal?

Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid submerging in water or using abrasive cleaners. We recommend applying a light coat of furniture wax or wood polish 1–2 times per year to maintain its luster

Read the full Use & Care Guide here ➔

Can I repair minor scratches or dents at home?

Yes. For minor scratches, you can use a color-matched furniture restoration marker (e.g., dark walnut shade). For shallow dents, wax sticks matching the wood color provide an easy at-home fix

Read the full Use & Care Guide here ➔

What should I do for advanced sculptural repairs?

For significant structural breaks or deep chips on carved elements, use a high-quality 2-part epoxy. If the damage is extensive, we recommend consulting a professional furniture or wood restorer
